Folio 184: St. Paul to Rochford. Reports on naval matters at Brest and Toulon. The abbé Maunay (Manet) formerly a missionary, is to form a trading company on the river Niger, higher up than the British settlements. He lists those who has subscribed. The plan is approved and is under the protection of the comte de la Marche. It is planned to obtain improved revenues from the farmers general, when the present lease runs out in 1774. Aiguillon is mistrustful of Denmark. Mercy has warned France not to interfere further in Sweden. France has sent Sweden money but rumours of Spanish money are not confirmed. He discusses developments in Prussia and Russia. Prussia may form a commercial company. A protest against payment of certain duties in Rouen has ended. Vielhorsky is to pass on French advice to the confederates in Bavaria to make common cause with the king of Poland. Peace seems more likely between Russia and Turkey.
