Description

Folio 174: St. Paul to Rochford. The king returns from Fontainebleau via Choisy and Belle-Vue. He expects France to accept the regulations made by Naples about consuls. France has made no representations to Prussia about Danzig [see f.148]. He believes the report of ships fitting out at Brest is untrue and arises from f.74, about ships taking troops to the West Indies. Boynes asked for 5 million livres for the navy. Terray is willing but at the expense of the army. A dispute is likely between Boynes and Monteynard. Terray, who is without scruples, is safe as long as he supplies du Barry with money. Rohan has sent un unfavourable report from Austria to Aiguillon about the army and finances. But he has reported direct and differently to Soubise, who is a close friend and an opponent of Aiguillon. Durand's mission to Russia is to get France considered as a mediator in the war with Turkey, to secure the release of French officers captured when fighting with the confederates and probably to sow dissention between the 3 partitioning powers. Further report of the confederates in Bavaria and the activities of Vielhorsky. Estaing has been ill and is succeeded at Brest by Bourdeilles de Brugnon, who had bombarded Algiers. Baron Beziewsky the Hungarian officer, who, with a few men, passed from Kamchatka to the sea of Japan, is in Paris, reported to be going to the East Indies with 500 men, unknown to Britain, and to be given command in the Isles de France. Free passage promised for Lynch's baggage. The new Venetian ambassador, Mocenigo, has arrived.
