Folio 97: St. Paul to Rochford. Aiguillon was clearly relieved that he did not want to discuss the memorial about India [f.67] but other matters, mainly Northern Europe. Aiguillon assured him that France would not help Sweden if she attacked someone else but wouldgive support, if she were attacked. The Dutch ambassador has given St. Paul the short answer given by France to each country participating in the declaration about the partition of Poland. Boynes has given up the plan to form a new East India company. He has been told that the Isles de France are too costly unless strongly enough supplied with troops for use in India. Boynes is unsuitable for his job and knows nothing about the navy. All ministers are insecure unless they have the backing of madame du Barry. He will send no report by post as it would certainly be opened. He encloses the new Swedish form of government [f.102]. The court will return to Versailles on November 17th.
