Folio 340: Blaquiere to Rochford. Aiguillon is pleased at f.322 [Port Bonavista]. He met him at madame du Barry's where he expressed his appreciation also to Boynes. Merci and Fuentes both approved in lavish terms. The Swedish minister, count Creutz, has had a courier from his court. There is speculation about the possible renewal of an expiring treaty with Russia and the king of Sweden's journey to Petersburg. Turkey has received the overture from France by St. Priest without enthusiasm, preferring deeds to words. Spain is arming, ostensibly against the Moors, in reality to join with France to secure the withdrawal of the Russian fleet from the Mediterranean. France and Spain go hand in hand in everything but France is badly informed about the intentions of the court of Vienna. D'Estaing has been named commander and inspector general of Brest.
Date and place: 1772 Aug 28 Paris.
