Folio 300: Harcourt to Rochford. The armistice [between Russia and Turkey] will be renewed after the congress, if peace seems likely. The Turks continue warlike preparations. Vioménil and the French officers have returned from Poland. The confederates would rather surrender to the Austrians than the Russians. There is jealousy of Prussia. The citizens of Bordeaux have decided not to buy the Château Trompette [see SP 78/284 f.309]. The controller general advanced money to Boynes in expectation of the sale and Monteynard had put in a claim. As this is Harcourt's last letter from France he reports on the situation at court. Aiguillon's influence will remain predominant, as long as he has du Barry's favour. He and the chancellor are not friends. Unpopular as Aiguillon is, the chancellor, who is cold and enterprising, is more so. The influence of du Barry increases daily and is secure unless the king's health fails, when his confessor might call for her removal from court. Any advantage for Choiseul is out of the question. He comments on his fall from favour, for being too arrogant. Durand [de Distroff] is going to Petersburg.
