Folio 281: Harcourt to Rochford. Aiguillon denied that the French squadron off Lisbon was intended to join with Spanish ships [see f.263]. It was there on exercises. Reports from Constantinople say that Turkey has rejected Russian terms. Other sources say an armistice has been signed. Aiguillon was told Aly Bey had been defeated. If Boynes does not make concessions, most of the senior officers in the marine corps are likely to quit the service. Aiguillon complained of a publication in London, which attacked him and favoured Choiseul. He asked for redress but was told that there was no remedy.
Date and place: 1772 July 8 Paris.
