Folio 173: Royal ordonnance creating 8 regiments to be known as the royal marine corps, whose function it will be to guard ports and arsenals as well as serve on board ships. Each will be named after a French port. It lays down the establishment of officers and menfor each regiment and unit thereof, the distribution of naval officers, the flags and the responsibilities of senior officers, including those involving the dockyards. It tables allowances for all ranks and the uniform for each regiment. The order to execute the ordonnance was issued on March 4th by the duc de Penthièvre, admiral of France.
