Folio 211: Allen, chairman of the Canada merchants to Rochford. The periods of payment are too long. The whole of the principal and interest were due in January last. The sum France acknowledges as due is large, when needed by a small number of individuals but insignificant when owed by a great nation. Nevertheless the merchants are willing for the total amount to be paid in 4 equal instalments, starting in January 1772 and on each January following. Failing acceptance of this, for 80% to be paid next January.
