Folio 183: Blaquiere to [Rochford]. Fuentes told him that Spain `had good intentions towards England and the whole universe'. Pearson, the messenger, was stopped on the road and his horses, which were fresh, were taken and jaded ones put to his carriage. Aiguillon has said that the Spanish ambassador no longer desired war, but Grimaldi was still resentful that Spain had allowed the crucial moment to pass, when Britain's navy was in a rotten condition. Aiguillon said the family compact ought to be advantageous to France, not ruinous, and she will not become involved in every nonsensical quarrel Spain may choose to seek. A serious moment had arrived with the illness of the king of Prussia.
Date and place: 1771 Oct 25 Fontainebleau.
