Folio 138: Blaquiere to Rochford. He expects that the troubles in the North will spread, in view of the increased demands on Turkey by Russia, the treaty between Turkey and the house of Austria and the Prussian declaration of support for Russia. France will fulfillher obligations not with troops but with money, although she has `not a single sou'. The debt will be acknowledged and may be paid `as our Canada paper has been'. The aversion of Aiguillon to war, the king's love of pleasure, the poverty, mean that the very existence of the present ministry depends on peace with England.
Date and place: 1771 Sept 20 Paris.
