Folio 211: Harcourt to Rochford. Encloses the protest made by the princes of the blood [f.214], expressive of the sentiments of the generality of the nobility. Reconciliation will be difficult. The king is most displeased by Conti, who was lately so friendly with du Barry and her party. All the princes except Orléans are hard up. La Vrillière, said France was willing to disarm. Harcourt refers to Brest, Rochefort and Toulon, also to alterations in the cavalry and special measures to attract soldiers to stay on after the end of their term of enlistment. The severe discipline is very unpopular. De Guines' secretary was arrested. for dabbling in stocks and being unable to pay, not the only foreigner to do so.
