Folio 167: Harcourt to Rochford. He has protested to La Vrillière about the controller's letter to the agents of the Canada merchants [f.160]. Encloses f.171. La Vrillière pleaded France's poverty. He has little influence. The princes of the blood, the peers and those appointed to compose the new Parlement were summoned to a lit de justice to register the famous edict. Of the princes of the blood only La Marche attended. He lists those peers and others, who voted against and only the moderating influence of Soubise, Bertin and Terray saved them from exile. The new Parlement has been installed. Other Parlements are likely to be suppressed. There is great ferment in France but he foresees no rising yet.
Date and place: 1771 Apr 17 Paris.
