Folio 37: Harcourt to Rochford. The distress of the people makes the government want peace. He cannot make an approach about the Canada business until a foreign minister is appointed. Two muskateers were sent to each of the presidents and counsellors of the Parlement of Paris, telling them to sign `yes or no' that they would obey the king and resume their functions. 110 refused, the other 50 signed but later repented and sent a Remonstrance. They are now all exiled to different parts of the kingdom. The other Parlements will suffer in the same way.
