Folio 11: Harcourt to Rochford. Encloses ff. 14, 16, listing the ships of the Spanish and French navies. He regards his source as authentic and speaks of great activity at Brest. Choiseul's enemies had tried in vain to have him sent to the Bastille. Activity in Spain points to an attack on Gibraltar. The chevalier de Vergennes is mentioned as a possible foreign minister. The post is still unfilled. He had fomented the war, which proved so fatal to the Turks and is said to be a man of ability. Monteynard is likely to become minister of war. Details of his career are given. He is backed by Condé. The controller general may become minister of the marine, holding both positions. Choiseul's failings are almost forgotten and his friends have ralled with money.
Date and place: 1771 Jan 2 Paris.
