Folio 165: Walpole to Weymouth. Choiseul said he had never considered his rôle as a mediator but felt justified in using his good offices to reconcile Britain and Spain and preserve peace. Masserano had full-powers and Britain's demands would in general be satisfied. Spain had suggested that, after the return of Port Egmont to Britain, both countries should leave the islands, which would remain neutral. Walpole thought negotiations would be spoiled, if the issue of neutrality was linked with the answer to Britain's explicit demands.
