Folio 58: Harcourt to [Weymouth]. The king is at Marli. Choiseul is worried at Grafton's resignation. Harcourt answered questions about lord North and lord Egmont, whom Choiseul feared more than Chatham. He admired Weymouth. As the smallest details about events inEngland are reported to Choiseul, he will report similar events in France. The duc de Richelieu believes that madame du Barry will never be as influential as madame de Pompadour and he despairs of making her subservient to his ambitions. One of Choiseul's friends said he had no more to fear from her than from his own indiscretion and warmth of temper. The controller general and Choiseul have had a difference of opinion about savings in the caisse militaire. The odium arising from the new financial measures falls on the controller and not on Choiseul.
Date and place: 1770 Feb 17 Paris.
