Description

Folio 166: Walpole to Weymouth. The controller general refuses to make any cash payment for the Canada reconnaissances and even when the date for encashment comes in 1771, will merely issue new certificates. But Walpole believes that the proprietors will not be compelled to convert into contract stocks. Choiseul, more sympathetic, wants to terminate the matter. He asked Walpole, if the merchants would accept payment below par in exchange for cash to which Walpole replied that they would. He enclosed ff.171 to 176 about a Mr Gordon, who has stayed in Rochefort and Brest and made extravagant promises in exchange for intelligence about the navy. He is suspected of plotting to set fire to a dockyard. He may be hanged. Choiseul, referring to f.147, said that her ambassadors at all courts, where there were ambassadors, had orders to insist on precedence and never to cede to the Russian ambassador. He refers to three ladies, who are not included in the Marli party and to du Barry. Paoli can make no effective resistance from the mountains.
