Folio 188: Walpole to Weymouth. It is reported that Prussia, Austria and France are negotiating a treaty about Poland and Russia. The exchange of ministers between France and Prussia has been postponed until January 2. There is no sign of a commercial treaty between them but there are rumours of French encouragement of Prussia to open a trading base on the Coromandel coast. He thinks this unlikely. The rumours may be based on the activities of a Prussian officer, Kniphausen, on an island off that coast, which might help the Emden company. Prussia might help French trade with Poland by allowing routes via Berlin rather than sailing round to Danzig. Chauvelin is not yet back from Corsica. The appointment of a new grand vizier is welcomed in France. He encloses ff.193, 196.
