Folio 104: Shelburne to Rochford. The cabinet meeting agreed that the treaty involved the absolute cession of Corsica to France and must endanger confidence between her and Britain. Châtelet has repeated the familiar arguments in its defense. Britain sees the Corsican issue against the background of France's alliances, her preparations for war and recent intelligence reports. Rochford is to make clear that Britain has not softened (adouci) her attitude.
Date and place: 1768 July 1 Whitehall.
