Folio 32: Shelburne to Rochford. Pleased he is better. This includes a statement to be made to the French government about Corsica. If France takes possession of it, it would endanger the peace of Europe and destroy confidence in French professions of peace. Châtelet regards it as a defensive measure of little importance. Choiseul must not underestimate British concern, which he elaborates, referring to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. General Paoli is reliably reported to have refused France's offer to leave him in possession of the rest of the island, if he ceded to her in perpetuity the province of Capo Corso along a dividing line given here. The Corsicans are determined to preserve their independence.
Date and place: 1768 May 27 Whitehall.
