Folio 214: Rochford to Shelburne. It is rumoured that, if the queen should die, the king would marry an archduchess. There were negotiations for the daughter of the duc d'Orléans to marry the emperor but Kaunitz stopped them. Orléans and Choiseul are close. Cooperation between Spain and Portugal now is concerned with the Jesuits. French finances are in an incredibly bad state. An edict has come out to ennoble some prominent merchants in exchange for the cancellation of money owed to them. It is regarded as an act of despair. This explains why France is passive towards events in Poland.
