Folio 204: Rochford to Shelburne. In answer to f.187. He hears that Spain and Portugal are more friendly than supposed. St. Priest's successor will be ordered to damage British trade with Portugal as much as possible. The report of a treaty between France, Spain and Portugal is not necessarily true. The Portuguese minister, Souza, has confirmed cooperation between Spain and Portugal about the Jesuits. He has no confirmation that France is hiring troops from Hessen-Kassel. Count Barberini has returned to Berlin. He is a chamberlain to the king of Prussia, connected with Cagnoni [see SP 78/240, f.258]. He is `a very intriguing man'. Rochford has sent someone to Brest to check reports. The French are very watchful at all seaports.
