Folio 91: Rochford to Shelburne. Saw Praslin, Choiseul being unwell. He expects the Canada business to proceed without difficulty, (`without any further rubbs'). Bougainville has gone to hand over possession of the Falkland islands to Spain. Rochford could hardly believe his ears, in view of the Manila ransom negotiations. He has received reliable intelligence that Austria has demanded of France 25,000 men or an equivalent subsidy, as she was determined to attack Prussia. Choiseul is against the idea and claims that the treaty of 1756 was defensive. If France is not involved, Britain must remain neutral.
Date and place: 1767 Feb 12 Paris.
