Folio 186: Rochford to Shelburne. Choiseul read him papers about the ship Jove. The intendant of Port au Prince alleged smuggling, which was the reason for the arrest of the ship, not the edict of 1727. This edict would not be revoked. In reply to British threats, he said Britain could make what laws she liked for her own islands. Encloses intelligence about transactions between France and Austria [missing here]. Refers to case of monsieur de la Chalotais. The Parlement sent a Remonstrance to the king, claiming that it alone was competent to judge it but it was overruled and summoned to Versailles.
Date and place: 1766 Dec 18 Paris.
