Folio 49: Lennox to Shelburne. Reports delivery of letters of recall. He has handed over to Porten. Foreign ministers in Paris suspect that Choiseul receives most of his intelligence about their courts from England, probably through the Portuguese, ministers Melloin London and Souza in Paris. Mello employs an Irish priest, who stays with Souza and there are frequent couriers. Souza is intimate with Choiseul. Lennox has left some ciphers out of their box in his room at Compiègne but the room is locked. He gives the cipher numbers. Refers to a proposal made by a mr Van Solen for sheathing ships against worms. Lennox will stay a few weeks at Aubigny.
