Folio 244: Circular letter from the earl of Shelburne to representatives in the Southern department. He announces his own appointment as secretary of state Southern department and the following government appointments: Lord Camden Lord Chancellor; Lord Northington President of the Council; Mr Pitt, created Earl of Chatham, Lord Privy Seal; Duke of Grafton, 1st Lord of the Treasury; mr Charles Townshend Chancellor of the Exchequer. Envoys are to give assurances of Britain's intention to continue to cultivate understanding with her allies, to preserve the inviolability of treaties and to maintain the peace of Europe. Shelburne reports the signing of a Treaty of Commerce at Petersburg. Distribution list: Lennox [Paris]; Devisme [Bavaria]; Murray [Turkey]; Hamilton [Naples]; Sherdley [?]; Hay [Portugal]; Mann [Florence]; Wright [Venice]; Norton [Swiss cantons].
