Folio 35: King George IIIrd's separate and private instructions to the duke of Richmond, on his appointment as ambassador to France. Among these are: 1. to insist on the observance of the Definitive Treaty of 1763 and previous treaty obligations; 2. to watch closely Franco-Austrian relations with Spain now that Grimaldi has replaced Wall; 3. to report any signs of increases in military or naval armaments; 4. to keep in close touch with Rochford in Madrid; 5. to watch relations with Prussia and the interests of the protestant religion in the German empire; 6. to watch matters relating to the pretender and his son. He is also to report on French finances and the relations between the Parlements and the assembly of the clergy, and on current issues, Dunkirk, French activities in America, money owed to British subjects in Canada, Newfoundland, St. Lucia and Cayenne.
