Description

Folio 114: Reply to points raised by Guerchy in f.97 and ff.99 to 109. No. 1. The Governor knows nothing about it. No. 2. The Treaty specified no restrictions on British fishing. The islands were given to France not as a preserve but as a shelter and refuge. No. 3.The British have orders to permit the French to stay long enough to complete their fishing and drying. Any officer using force against them will be punished. No. 4. Britain holds that Riche point is at 50 degrees 30 minutes latitude north. The French map is full of errors and worthless. No. 5. The complaints of harassments are exaggerated. There are plenty of harbours. No. 6. The Governor was right to forbid trade with the Eskimos, who are under British protection. He refers to a French captain trying to bribe a British officer to allow him to go to Labrador. Halifax enumerates British complaints. 1. Wooden structures destroyed by French. 2. On returning, French appropriated materials from other structures. 3. Cutting of timber. 4. They leave behind quantities of salt. 5. One vessel stayed behind to trade in furs with the natives. 6. The boats from St. Pierre and Miquelon fish along adjacent coasts and cut and remove timber. 7. French fishermen interfere with British nets. 8. French fishermen have fished off the island of Belle-Isle on the coast of Labrador.
