Folio 169: Halifax to Hertford. Guerchy has presented French claims for British prisoners of war and he encloses ff.176 to 189. Guerchy asked for a reply before his departure. The French assess the balance in Britain's favour at 15 million (livres) and propose paying 1 million a year for 15 years. Hertford is to make clear that there can be no question of deducting the cost of prisoners taken before the declaration of war or of accepting the 15 year period. The East India claim is omitted. He is to press for speedy action about Dunkirk and he is to protest if the proposals for dealing with the Canada bills are to be applied to British subjects. Encloses copies of ff.146, 151.
