Folio 110: Stanley to [Pitt]. The papers relating to the attack of July 15 [Willinghausen] and the dispute between Broglie and Soubise have been examined at Versailles. They favour Soubise and Pompadour wants them published, which Choiseul opposes. The Dauphin protects Broglie. [See SP 78/251, ff.230, 240, 243, 246]. He describes the position of Choiseul vis-à-vis the Dauphin, Pompadour and the King. The Empress Queen corresponds with Pompadour. Choiseul desires peace and he and his sister dislike the influence of Starhemberg and Grimaldi. Choiseul may have been forced into introducing Spanish affairs into the peace negotiations. Stanley has been advised against seeing Pompadour. Starhemberg and Grimaldi are in her favour. Exchanges in the Netherlands have been offered, also Spanish naval support at Martinique and in the West Indies. If Choiseul is removed, his successor will favour Austria and Spain. The Parlement of Brittany is `stirring' against the Jesuits.
Date and place: 1761 Aug 20 Paris.
