Folio 230: Stanley to [Pitt]. Refers to a great event [? French defeat in Germany. See f.214], of July 16th. France needs to raise money and the King demands the imposition of a third Vingtième. Choiseul insisted on holding a Lit de justice, opposed by Pompadour, at which the King got a cool reception from the people. Refers to the great defeat in Germany and consternation in France and to the opinions held of Broglie and Soubise. Choiseul supports Broglie, Pompadour Soubise. Encloses copies of accounts of the battle from both Marshals [ff.240, 243] also the Gazette of July 25 [f.246]. He has informed Choiseul of the fall of Pondicherry [f.238]. Gives more details of financial measures of a 3% loan of 30 millions and of reports he is compiling about the French economy. Mr. Mackenzie will deliver this letter. Stanley has given f.222 to Choiseul.
