Folio 172: Stanley to [Pitt]. Choiseul will wait for Britain's reply to his secret proposals [see f.134] before informing Bussy. Vienna and Spain fear a separate peace. He has discussed German affairs. Choiseul accepted the cession of Canada but was adamant in wanting fishing rights from Cape Breton. Failing these, he would embrace Austria. Also discussed were Newfoundland, Dunkirk, Hesse-Kassel and Benkulen, also Belle-Isle, Minorca, Pondicherry and Gorée in the context of restitution or exchange. Mentions Grimaldi in connection with disputes about prizes and logwood in Honduras and factors involved in Ostend and Nieuport. The Council [of State] is preparing a memorial [see f.187]. It will insist on fishing rights, refers Gorée to the East India Company and is adamant about Dunkirk. Choiseul hinted at new allies, presumably Spain. Mentions Ste. Croix.
Date and place: 1761 July 1 Paris.
