Folio 221: Newcastle to Albemarle, reporting what Vergennes had said concerning the need for the Empire to ask Prussia and the Electors of Cologne and the Palatinate for their votes and to meet the claims of the Palatinate, if French support was to be ensured. But Haslang, Wrede and Rex had said that Vergennes had been ordered to make a strong declaration to Newcastle. Stadion is in close touch with Vergennes. Newcastle encloses copies of letters to Hyndford and Keith [see SP 80/189]. He suggests a joint approach with the Empire to Prussia, Cologne and the Palatinate. Vergennes does not welcome the arrival of Assebourg. The Elector of Cologne now favours the election. He sends dispatches for keene under flying seal.
