Folio 105: Newcastle to Albemarle, enclosing an extract of a letter to Holdernesse. He was justified in interpreting the invitation to the King as asking him to mediate, but the King will not do so, if the Empire wishes to treat directly with the Palatinate and if France supports the Elector's extravagant claims. He welcomes St. Contest's statement that France would not encourage trouble, if the minority refused to recognise the election by a majority vote. He refers to Prussian influence and to the reactions of Vergennes and Mirepoix.
