Description

Folio 231: Keith to Newcastle. A dispatch for Richecourt, carried by the same courier as this letter, had been read to him by Uhlfeldt. Had Kaunitz not been ill, Puyzieulx would probably not have demanded a pledge from the Empire not to assist Russia in any way. Uhlfeldt would see Hautefort, to dispel French suspicions. Coloredo and Bartenstein would be present. Uhlfeldt blamed Prussia for French fears. The report from Goesz is taken seriously and Bretlach has been ordered to ask Russia what she understands under the treaty of Neustadt, regarding the rights of the four estates in Sweden. No answer is proposed to the paper given to Puebla and there are no developments concerning the Elector Palatine. Metternich reports on the unreliability of the Elector of Cologne and that France offers a subsidy in return for Assebourg replacing Metternich. Widman has been told to ask the Elector of Bavaria to warn the Elector of Cologne of French ambitions. Keith has delivered personally the King's letters of condolence, on the death of the Empress Dowager. He was cordially received and the Empress and Emperor expressed resentment at Prussia's attitude to the King as Elector and friendship towards Britain.
