Folio 221: Extract from the mémoire instructif given by Richecourt to Newcastle. In answer to Hautefort, the Empire reiterates its desire for peace, criticises French acceptance of Prussian rumours, affirms that British adherence to the treaty of 1746 [the Two Empresses] involves no new commitments and states that the Empire has made only defensive alliances. Refers to the report from Goesz [see f.213], to the paper given to Puebla [see f.102] and to Swedish affairs. French views on Russia should be tested. Kaunitz is to work with Albemarle. Keith, Dickens and Bretlach [Prettlack] will be kept informed.
