Folio 132: Bedford to Yorke. Enclosing copies of accounts [not enclosed here: enclosed with letter from Lords Commissioners of Trade, Apr. 1] from Mr Sharpe, agent for Barbados. French claim to Tobago is based on its capture from the Dutch in the reign of Louis XIVand on the Treaty of Nijmegen Bedford argues that the Duke of Courland, who held Tobago under Britain, was driven out by rebels, who were defeated by the French; the Treaty of Nijmegen therefore does not apply. French activities in St. Vincent, St. Lucia and Dominica and on Tobago as reported by Captain Wheeler of H.M.S. Boston. Yorke is to ask Maurepas what orders have been issued to French captains and to affirm Britain's intention to defend her rights in Tobago.
