Folio 295: Thompson to Newcastle. Report that Austria has lent the King of Sardinia cavalry units to oppose La Mina's Spanish force; suggestion that Sardinia was about to ally with France and Spain may have been French propaganda designed primarily to offset the public's mood of despondency; the declaration by [? Austrian] Mintzell which reveals Austrian intention to seize part of France, has rallied the French people behind their government; Thompson adds: `whoever has studied the Genius of the People of this Country will find that tho' they may bear a beating they will not bear being insulted'.
