French war-weariness; France will continue to afford subsidies to Charles Albert unless he capitulates to Austria; French fear of a `war of the Empire' against her if Charles Albert ceases to be the Emperor; French hope to encourage Dutch to remain neutral and to persuade Prussia that undue expansion by Austria might result in Prussia having to give back Silesia; French suppose that England might derive commercial advantages from Spain by continuing the war and drawing Spain into her side by promising gains in Italy yet this object could also be achieved by threatening to expel Carlos from the Two Sicilies. Campoflorido's repeated hints of Spanish desire for peace; French consolidated defensive deployment on the Rhine; French naval preparations; Admiral Mathews has concluded an agreement with Genoa whereby Spanish artillery there will be removed to Corsica.
