Worried expressions of French ministers belie the impression fostered in the Paris Gazette that [Dettingen] was a French victory; French units advanced along a narrow defile contrary to orders, and army neglected to secure a wood on their left, Anglo-Hanoverians attacked from it with a devastating hail of fire causing about 4,000 French casualties; Broglies' army is marching to join Noailles; rumour that Belle-Isle has been sent to the Bastille.
