Folio 232: Thompson to Newcastle. French Court is tired of the war, yet does not see how to get out of it, being in a weak military position any reasonable peace proposals the French may make are likely to be rejected, while any proposals have now to be agreed by all the secretaries of state rather than by one premier ministre; designation of Archbishop of Bourges for post of French ambassador to the Vatican regarded as indication of Tencin's influence.
Date and place: 1743 July 5 Paris.
