Folio 228: Thompson to Newcastle. Conflicting reports of the battle of [Dettingen]; by one report Stair allowed the French to throw two bridges across the Main, by feigning retreat induced the French to cross them, and attacked the French before they had time to complete the crossing and re-form, with great success; by the other the French army carried the day, inflicted more casualties than they suffered, and forced the Anglo-Hanoverian army to retreat to Hanau; French opinion fears that the first report is true; Amelot defends French efforts to strengthen Dunkirk.
