Folio 200: Thompson to Newcastle. Austrians capture Deggendorf from a French force under Prince de Conti; French obliged to abandon their supplies; 600 Bavarian cavalry nearly wiped out at Dorfen; these defeats induce despondency in the French, by nature inclined to over react to success or defeat; `the great advantage of the French troops is in their furious onset'; but Prince Charles has had the good fortune to attack the French first, forcing them on to the defensive; Thompson felt it essential to send Stair news of movements of Noailles' army; Bavarians have evacuated Braunau.
