Folio 207: Thompson to Newcastle. Fleury while remarking that British warships were the aggressors in the naval incident [described in f.195] did not seem angry about it, conceivably because the French ships, while heavily outnumbered appear to have successfully repulsed the English attacks; Van Hoey however believes the French are very incensed but are containing their emotions until a more propitious time; heavy toll by sickness of crews of French squadrons returned from the West Indies; Spanish disgust at French having abandoned them in the West Indies; de Belle-Isle, French representative at the Electoral Diet, is finding little support; George II's speech to Parliament pledging support for Austria should dissuade her from negotiating a bargain with France; Thompson believes French ministers will at first utter threats and then do nothing; rumour that d'Antin has been killed by one of his officers in a duel.
Date and place: 1741 Apr 28 Paris.
