Folio 176: Thompson to Newcastle. The return of d'Antin and his squadron is expected; dismay at d'Antin's incompetence is widespread; French naval preparations; French army augmentations so often discussed have not been effected. French non-committal attitude towards Spain and Austria; Prince Cantemir conveyed Russian pledge to uphold the Pragmatic Santion and invitation to France to join in this guarantee; Fleury declined to commit himself; French determination to prevent Francis Stephen becoming Emperor; an unnamed Frenchman suggested to Wasner that France would be prepared to back Austria if Austria in return was prepared to demolish the fortifications in Luxembourg; Wasner rejected this and insisted that France had treaty obligations to assist Austria; report from Brest, of `a sort of embargo' upon all ships in the area. French rumour that British warships are at anchor off Ushant.
