Description

Folio 72: [Castropiñano to his Court]. Recommended to Amelot an alliance between France, Spain and Two Sicilies against Austria and her allies; Amelot comments on financial weakness of Spain and to a lesser extent the Two Sicilies; Castropiñano's reply; weakness of England; Spain stronger than she seems; inhabitants of the Two Sicilies not particularly dissatisfied with their government; France anxious to avoid antagonizing other powers particularly German princes; [Castropiñano] believes Sardinia will ally with the Bourbon powers Fleury's gratitude that [Two Sicilies] has permitted export of grain to France; and indication that Fleury wants a Bourbon alliance; Fleury's conviction that the King of Prussia can only be deterred from aggression by being beaten in battle; Castropiñano warns of Francis Stephen's antipathy to France; speculation regarding attitudes of Russia, Turkey, Saxony etc; Orry; Campoflorido; French ministers seem more inclined to the proposed alliance now than formerly.
