Folio 232: Thompson to Newcastle. He showed Wasner Newcastle's letter [f.221]. Wasner says that Fleury has repeated his intention of respecting the Pragmatic Sanction; France accepts Austrian view that Ferdinand I's will does not justify the claims by the Elector of Bavaria to Bohemia and Hungary. The French Court has now `owned' the manifesto [f.227] which has been circulated to test French public reaction and brace the nation for a possible war; French army amounts to between 120,000 and 130,000 men; naval strength, preparations and details of dispositions.
