Folio 223: Thompson to Newcastle. Encloses a copy of a paper [see f.227] printed without express official authority, but with the complicity of the French Court. Fleury is giving away copies to visitors. France has assured Austria that she will respect the Pragmatic Sanction, and that her rearmament is not directed against Austria. French influence will be used to persuade Turkey to settle an agreed frontier with Austria. France anxious to know reactions of Spain and Two Sicilies to the Emperor's death. Elizabeth Farnese and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies are angry with France after discovering secret French orders to Villeneuve to `traverse'. Finocchietti in negotiations with Turkey. The will of Charles VI does not appear to contain clauses nominating Charles Albert to be the next Emperor as previously reported [see f.205].
