Folio 217: Newcastle to Thompson. Instructs him to maintain close consultation with Wasner, the Austrian ambassador in Paris; Charles Albert of Bavaria has laid claim to the Austrian throne and to Hungary and Bohemia by virtue of the will of Ferdinand I of Austria;Mirepoix, the French ambassador at Vienna had a long consultation with Perouse, the Bavarian ambassador and is reported to have given French assurances to Bavaria; Perouse left Vienna after declaring Charles Albert's claims. Robinson ordered to give Austria British reassurance that she will support the Pragmatic Sanction. Instructs him to try and discover French attitudes to this, strength of French forces, and French attitude to Spain. Instructs him to use the intelligence network built up by Waldegrave; approves payment to Castropînanos [secretary for information] and wants further reports from the Sicilian Abbot.
