Folio 84: Waldegrave to Newcastle. Maurepas complains that Governor Mathews' seizure of the Fleuron and Fortune was unjustifiable since he did so under a law concocted by himself, and not by the British government, and because ships returning from French islands have to pass within a league of Montserrat or risk shipwreck on reefs. Maurepas denies that the Scipio was seized as a reprisal, but because she was suspected of smuggling.
Date and place: 1737 Feb 16, Paris.
